Ep. 353: Victoria Monét on Mom Guilt, Working Motherhood, and Her First Book
During a conversation at The Reparations Club, I spoke to Victoria Monét about her debut children’s book, motherhood, and chasing her dreams. Victoria discussed the difficult moments of separation that inspired “Everywhere You Are.” From her daughter's stay in the NICU to her first day of school, Victoria realized there wasn't a market for explaining similar periods of distance to children. She drew on her incredible songwriting ability and childhood memories of living in a starlit neighborhood to write the book she and her daughter needed. The pair collaborated on this project, much like their Grammy nominated “Hollywood.”
Victoria explained how she ensures that her daughter feels loved despite her busy schedule. She shared their routine with us, which includes listening to calming frequencies and learning positive affirmations. Hazel has repeated these affirmations outside of Victoria’s presence, so she is confident that these reminders are taking root. Our discussion revealed Victoria's deep commitment to fostering Hazel’s sense of independence. She hopes that by communicating the importance of traveling to chase her dreams, Hazel will be inspired to chase hers with confidence.
Tune in as we discuss:
How she prepares Hazel before she is away on tour
Why chasing her dreams is good for her and her family
Tips for dealing with mom guilt
How her career aspirations changed with motherhood
The wellness habits that help her unwind when she’s home
